April is nationally recognized as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in order to remind drivers that doing other tasks while behind the wheel, can be harmful to other drivers on the roadway.

According to officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the most dangerous distraction when a person is behind the wheel is texting. This is because it takes away from the three senses that a person needs while driving.

Visual, manual, and cognitive senses are all used when texting and this makes it very difficult to drive well when doing this. Data shows that a crash is 23 percentĀ  more likely to occur then if a person is driving while not distracted. Other activities that law enforcement considers distracted driving are reading, watching videos, eating, talking to passengers, talking on the phone and more.
